Christmas Ornaments & Traditions

Every year growing up, my mom gave me a new ornament that I’d open up Christmas morning. She always picked each one with a purpose. Either it was chosen because it had a special story behind it or it was chosen simply based on it’s beauty.  One year it was a huge icicle covered in sparkles or another year it was a snowman dressed up in St. Louis Cardinals gear. They all were marked with the year they were given to me and it became one of my favorite traditions. The older I got, the more I cherished them. We’ve continued this tradition with our sister Leska and it’s been so much fun passing on the joy of it all. It was so sweet when she pulled out her personal box of ornaments this year and was so excited to hang each one in it’s special place. It truly made my heart smile.

As Vitaliy and I were shopping for this year’s ornament for Leska, we stumbled upon one for ourselves. Isn’t it funny how we go Christmas shopping for others and yet always seem to add a few items to the cart for ourselves. I know this happens to me! But when we saw this ornament it was all too appropriate for us to pass it up. Here it is adorning our beautiful Christmas tree.

Do you have a favorite ornament or favorite Christmas tradition?

First of all, what an appropriate ornament :) and it looks like a beautiful Christmas tree too.

I have a few favorite Christmas traditions. It seems they change with my age but I remember and cherish them all.
As a very little girl I remember gathering at my Baba and Dido’s house with all my aunts, uncles and cousins to celebrate.
As a teenager on Christmas Eve two of my mom’s sisters would come over. We would cook all afternoon preparing Ukranian dishes as part of our celebration.
As a grown woman and mother of two children who couldn’t wait for Santa, we started the tradition to open one present on Christmas Eve.
Now I will be starting traditions with my grandchildren. Life is good :)

    Love the ornament too! :)
I didn’t grow up with this tradition, but we give the kids a new pair of pajamas on Christmas Eve. And in recent years, it’s been matching ones, and they love that, but it’s getting harder to find matching ones in bigger sizes now!
I also love finding whatever Starbucks is open on Christmas Day. This year it’s the Metro Center one in Foster City. Mary Helen Esposito from CPC will be working that day, and I highly encourage everyone to stop in and wish her a Merry Christmas! :)

  3. I would probably cover my Christmas tree with an ornaments like this one :)
and this is such a good idea to start a Christmas tradition with our boys…since i never had one.
    Merry Christmas You guys!!!!

What a great tradition! My brother Matty always plays Santa Christmas morning with his Santa hat and gives each person their presents from the tree. We all watch each person open their present. When we were kids it was always tradition to try waiting up for Santa upstairs overlooking the fireplace and tree, but of course we never could, and when we woke up we’d run downstairs screaming at all the presents under the treee. Then we’d look at the plate of cookies and milk all gone and read our letter from Santa ’till we eventually caught on that it was Dad’s handwriting!

We have a Nativity Scene and every year, a different child in our family gets to unwrap it and set it up.
We go out and collect miniature pine cones and pineneedles and decorate them with glitter and put them in the window sills.
When I was a child, I always wanted a miniature doll house. When I married, my husband and I made one for our daughter. Some from whatever materials/fabrics we had.The doll house was destroyed during the last earthquake-BUT all furniture intact!Years later, we purchased a sturdier doll house at a thrift store. The tradition: we added something new to the doll house each Christmas. Both our daughters enjoyed it along with their countless friends and now our grand-daughter and her friends enjoy it. We still add something special to the collection every year. That is our traditions!
